State Overview and Advice

In order to  register a vehicle in New York, you need to provide proof of identity under the state's Six Points of Identity system, and a New York address.

If you do not have six points of identity, we recommend starting your visit in another state, or using visitor.us' services to register a vehicle  that you buy in New York.

The Registration Process

New York vehicle registrations are handled by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV).

If you buy your vehicle from a dealer and plan to register it in New York, the dealer will issue you a 30-day In-Transit Permit or New York license plates and apply for title and registration on your behalf. If you plan to register your vehicle elsewhere, the dealer will issue you a 30-day In-Transit Permit.

If you buy your vehicle from a private party and plan to register it in New York, bring the required items (below) to a NYSDMV office in the same county or borough as your registration address to register your vehicle. If you plan to register your vehicle elsewhere, 30-day In-Transit Permits are available from NYSDMV offices.

For vehicles being registered in New York, New York sales taxes are payable to the dealer upon sale, or NYSDMV upon registration (if purchased from a private party).
